- Freysnes - We meet up at Freysnes gas station by our equipment truck. There we will fit you with the equipment needed to hike a glacier confidently and safely. From there we drive our trusted super-jeeps to the glacier’s edge. Then we will begin our hike towards the ice fall on the picturesque Falljökull.
Going glacier hiking is a must do in Iceland. Being a local company we truly appreciate this area that we call our home and we love show people the stunning nature of Vatnajökull, the largest glacier in Europe.

Embark upon an enthralling exploration to an imposing glacial cascade with the Glacier Discovery tour. Following a brief journey in a robust 4x4 super-jeep, we approach the glacier’s brink. We then don our crampons and wield our ice axes to commence our glacial trek.
This tour is tailored towards those seeking a comprehensive glacial trek in Iceland. Throughout this trek, your guide will elucidate on the geological, geographic, and historical facets of the proximate area, while indicating the unique features of the ice. The perpetual changes of the glacier’s facade and hue throughout the year result in the intermittent appearance and disappearance of features like Moulins, glacial cones, and crevasses.

Glacier Discovery is the ideal way to experience Vatnajokull up close. - Our Glacier Discovery adventure with guide Barbara was simply incredible. Barbara took great care of us, from outfitting us with crampons, axes, helmets and climbing harnesses, to leading the way through the ice fall and giving us interesting and relevant information along the way. Definitely enjoyed the unique vistas and will likely come back for another visit as the glacier is constantly changing and no two tours are ever the same.

positive experience to visit a glacier - The tour was very exciting. it is a tourist tour, you do not expect extreme sporting activities, but breathtaking views. the fact that there are only a few people is very positive, compared to other tours that host up to 16 people. The guides are all very attentive to people and explain well. the equipment is all quality.
the tour does not include visiting ice caves

DO THIS TOUR - Amazing experience!! we were reccomended this tour by some friends and it did not disappoint. Very private and information with a good amount of walking. The ice wall is incredible and you won’t want to miss out on the opportunity. Our guide Helka was the best

Ice Cave Discovery - Fantastic excursion, an amazing experience to spend time on the glacier and the ice caves are a real natural wonder!
It happened to be a very windy day but our guide made sure everyone in the group was ok at all times and adapted the trip to make it as enjoyable for us as possible despite the conditions, locating numerous different ice caves across the glacier that we could experience (and shelter in!) whilst learning about the caves and other glacier features. This was a major benefit of being in a small group (we were 8 people).
Overall really experienced, informative and friendly guide and unique experience, definitely recommend the Discovery option if you have the time.

Amazing experience! - This was an amazing experience. Our guide was very friendly and knowledgeable. She shared many facts throughout the tour about the glacier and it’s history. I was nervous about the difficulty of the hike but we made frequent stops to allow for pictures and rest which made everything easier overall. Would definitely recommend to anyone visiting!

Fabulous experience - The highlight of our trip. We had glorious sunshine and a ferocious cold wind - but our guide Arno made sure we were all fine, told us all about the glaciers and ice caves and took us to some truly amazing places. Local Guide is a great company with small groups and good equipment.

Smaller size group of these tours - highly recommended - This was one of the most incredible things I have ever done - such a beautiful and one off experience. We had such an interesting and fun day with our guide Arno (Thank you Arno!). What was great about using 'Local Guide of Vatnajökull' was the size of the group. They have much smaller groups than other companies and it made for such a better experience. You could see other comps with groups of around 20 people, whilst Local Guide will max have around 8 per group. You get such a different more unique experience with this smaller group. Would highly recommend!
