Highlights
  • Maeklong Railway Market (Talad Rom Hub) - Maeklong Railway Market is a traditional Thai market selling fresh vegetables, food and fruit. What makes the market special is that it occupies part of a train line. A few times a day, there’s a train running directly through the market. A few minutes before the train comes, vendors lower their umbrellas and move some of their produce away from the train tracks. Some are left on the ground, with the train passing right over them. Amazingly, nothing gets damaged or broken, and as soon as the train passes, the vendors move their goods back onto the tracks and continue as normal (until the next train arrives).

Additional Information

Every sightseer should make time for the one-of-a-kind Maeklong Market, commonly referred to as the ‘Risky Market’. This market is remarkable for a railway line that cuts right through its center. In a matter of seconds, vendors must move their goods and themselves aside to let the train pass, an impressively choreographed routine that is fascinating to observe.
A second stop on the tour is the Damnoen Saduak floating market. While it remains a functioning market for locals, its charm has also attracted a substantial tourist crowd. Visitors can leisurely stroll along the canal, partake in a brief paddle boat excursion, and do some shopping.

Travel Buddies-Atlanta in Thailand - This tour is one that you have to experience. Our group of 15 boarded the train with the tour guide, not knowing exactly what to expect when the train pulled into the market. We were so close to the vendors and people. Then we got off the train and experienced being in the crowd when the train came thru. WOW! It was fun.

It was awesome! The tour itself, the tour guide and the day! - The overall tour was nice and interesting. We were able to buy plenty of things in the Maeklong Train Market and eat lots of seafood in the Amphwa Floating Market, but sadly we were not able to see much of the fireflies because it was not in season when we visited (October is the season for fireflies, we went during February)

Below expectation tour. - Interesting day yesterday. This tour has a lot if driving. Our van was not the most comfortable (older van model). Most if us had stiff muscles by the end of the day. The boat ride was also shorter (about 10 minutes) than what we were told (20-25 minutes). It took about 3h30 to get back to our hotel.

Only if you need transportation - If you need just transportation to the markets; this is it! And that is exactly what you'll get. Our "tour guide" was Elf. I have no idea when the markets started, why or any other details. The almost two hour ride there and back was spent in near silence. No explanation of what we were seeing such as the salt fields or life in general. Nothing about the markets. Elf spent his time on two cell phones; one for watching YouTube and the other for playing games. And that's the best part of the trip. The ride was in the most uncomfortable van ever; without shocks. Airline economy seats are better! We were the last to get picked up, so naturally we got the back seat. First, the windows in the van are low and tiny. Good luck seeing anything out of them and impossible in the back seat. And then the shocks, or lack thereof. Every bump in the road made your head hit the ceiling. And oh, no leg room. NONE. And it was hot. I was going to get car sick; so I squeezed on the top of everyone to get to the front and squatted where there wasn't a seat. We asked Elf to ask everyone if we could rotate seats. He said he would try which meant, heck NO! At the two stops, we told us where and when our meeting point was and left. When he did speak, he spoke softly and was hard to hear. The markets in itself was fun. I am pleased we went. However, that van ride as the ride from hell.

Terrible customer experience - Terrible tour operator. Viator confirmation said 9 am yet tour guide expected us to be ready to leave prior to 8. We were a group of 9, including 3 kids, and the operator refused to wait. We requested them to wait so we can feed the kids breakfast and get them ready and they refused. Furthermore, they declined a request for a refund despite no tour ever occurring
