Highlights
  • Place du Grand 9 Avril 1947 - The Grand Socco, short for Grand Socco Square, is a lively and historically important public square situated in the heart of Tangier, Morocco. “Socco” comes from the Arabic word “Souk,” meaning market, and the Grand Socco has long been a central hub for commerce and cultural exchange. The Grand Socco acts as a bridge between the old medina and the modern city. It is a bustling crossroads where both locals and tourists gather to soak in the vibrant atmosphere. The square is known for its open space, a mix of traditional and colonial architecture, and the constant flow of people. The square is not just a commercial center but also a meeting place for various cultures and communities. Its importance extends beyond its physical space, as it has been the site of numerous cultural and political events over the years. It was here that the former King of Morocco, Mohamed V, declared the country’s independence in 1947. - Tangier Casbah - The Tangier Casbah, rich in history, stands as a testament to the city’s diverse and storied past. Dating back to medieval times, this ancient fortress has seen the rise and fall of various civilizations. From Phoenician and Roman influences to Arab and Andalusian contributions, the Casbah’s architecture is a blend of cultural legacies. Positioned at the highest point in the city, the Casbah served as a strategic defense against invaders. Its towering walls and narrow, winding streets tell stories of battles fought and victories won. Over the centuries, it has been a melting pot of cultures, creating a unique blend of traditions that are distinctly Tangier. As you explore the Casbah, you’ll encounter architectural marvels like the Dar el-Makhzen palace, showcasing Moroccan craftsmanship and elegance. The Kasbah Mosque, with its intricate details, reflects the city’s Islamic heritage. - Musee de la Kasbah - This museum is located in the former sultan’s palace, Dar El Makhzen. It focuses on the history of the area from prehistoric times to the 19th century. Exhibits are well-presented in French and Arabic only. Start your visit by moving counterclockwise around the first courtyard before heading inside to see the rest of the displays, and then take a stroll in the charming Andalusian garden. Highlights include the mosaic of Venus from Volubilis and various statues, as well as giant replica maps. The first map traces trade routes from the Phoenician era to the electronic goods of the 21st century; the second is a beautiful map of the known world made in Tangier in 1154 (note: it’s upside down from the viewer’s perspective). The museum is located within the medina—follow the perimeter to the western end, to the highest part of the city, enter through the Bab Kasbah gate, and follow the road to the museum. The admission fee is 3 USD per person. - Medina of Tangier - The old medina, or the “switchboard zone” as W. Burroughs called it, is a maze of narrow alleys and ancient secrets that has captivated many artists and writers. In its labyrinth, you can experience a sensory symphony—spices wafting through bustling markets, the call to prayer blending with vibrant street life. The medina’s weathered walls whisper tales of time, and its vivid colors, intricate patterns, and hidden courtyards offer a visual feast, reflecting a bohemian spirit. Amidst ancient architecture, one can find liberation and a refuge from monotony. The medina’s timeless charm fuels creativity, providing a sanctuary where unconventional beauty and the quest for soulful existence converge. The air is thick with the fragrance of exotic spices, and the sounds of vibrant street life harmonize with the distant call to prayer. Today, the Medina of Tangier hosts various galleries showcasing a diverse range of artwork. - Tangier American Legation Museum - The American Legation in Tangier holds a unique and significant place in the city’s history. Established in 1821, it is the first property acquired abroad by the United States government and is recognized as the oldest American diplomatic property in the world. One of the most notable events associated with the American Legation is the signing of the Moroccan-American Treaty of Friendship in 1786, marking the beginning of diplomatic relations between the two nations. This treaty, which predates the U.S. Constitution, highlights the longstanding and friendly connection between the United States and Morocco. Today, the American Legation is a museum and cultural center, featuring exhibitions that celebrate the historical, cultural, and artistic ties between the United States and Morocco. It stands as a testament to the enduring diplomatic relationship and symbolizes the shared values and mutual respect between the two nations. The admission fee is 5 USD per person. - Moshe Nahon Synagogue - Located on a dead-end street off the rue des Synagogues in the Beni Idir quarter of the Tangier medina, this synagogue was built in the 19th century by Moïse Nahon, a prominent educator and scholar from an influential Jewish family in Tangier. The synagogue ceased activity in the second half of the 20th century and fell into disrepair until its restoration in 1994. It now functions as a museum.

Perhaps the greatest tour that Africa has to offer - This was so much more than a tour to me and my family. Because of the Expertise and wealth of historical knowledge that Anas has, He made us feel right at home from the moment we first met him. Perhaps one of my favorite memories of all time was sharing a traditional Moroccan meal in the home of one of the locals who worked tirelessly all day on a gorgeous four course meal. This is a memory that would not have taken place without the facilitation and expertise of Anas. Do yourself a favor and book this tour,, because once you do, you’ll have a friend for life. He is truly one of the most intelligent and interesting people that I have ever met in the world.
