Highlights
  • Jinvali Water Reservoir - Zhinvali (Jinvali) water reservoir, also known as a lake is located on the Georgian Military Highway. Soviets constructed the dam in the 1980s. As Tbilisi was growing rapidly, there was a need of a new water supply. Government decided that the Aragvi Gorge rich with glacier water was the perfect spot. The city of Zhinvali(Jinvali) had been at the crossroads of the great trading routes. Therefore throughout the history, it was a city of Georgian elite. It was rich with fortresses, towers and palaces. Though most of these had tumbled down to ruins throughout the centuries, territory promised a big archaeological treasure.

Unfortunately, the protests didn’t bother the Soviet Government and they proceeded to flood the area burying centuries of history under 75 meters of water. In the winter times, you can still see a small gem of the old Zhinvali. As the water levels drop, a church once located at a hill overlooking the city, surfaces from underneath the water.

Beautiful sights! Very affordable! - The places seen on the tour were just as described in the tour description. We saw everything and it was all beautiful!! The bus was very comfortable. The tour lasted from 9am-8pm so plan for a full day. Bring enough cash (20 GEL) for the extra ride to the Gergeti Trinity Church since it is totally worth it! Also bring cash for the lunch and any snacks along the way (20-50 GEL). Only complaint was lunch was at the Best Western in Gudauri. While the food itself was not bad, travelers from the US at least don’t typically want to go to a hotel chain for a meal on a special tour. Otherwise loved it. Especially for how affordable the tour is.

Tour was okay okay - Tour was okay not great because we didn’t got enough time in Kazbegi, and also the tour guide was a lil rude even when I asked him to charge my phone in the bus he denied.

Good trip, but… - The scenery is stunning and the vehicle was comfortable with strong AC. I just wish I was with the better crowd. As a solo traveler, socialization is a big part of why I sign up for the group tours. I was the only solo traveler, and when I was trying to initiate any conversations to others, I was only replied with dirty looks. Our guide, Diana, was not at all helping with this situation and made no efforts to have people interact. During lunch, I thought it will be a good opportunity to get to know other travelers since I expected everyone to sit together at one big table, which would be completely normal, but she let everyone cut loose and we were all sitting at separate tables. I was about to eat all alone until a nice family amongst the group took me in. All in all, I am glad I went but certainly with different group/guide.
