Highlights
  • Zhinvali Reservoir - Zhinvali reservoir - Although the term “reservoir” might conjure images of numerous metal water tanks, the reality is quite the opposite. Situated 70 km from Tbilisi, Zhinvali captivates with its beauty and resembles the Scandinavian fjords in its landscape.
  • Ananuri Fortified Castle Ensemble - Fortress Ananuri - Located 70 kilometers from the capital, Ananuri fortress served as a refuge for King Teimuraz and the Kakhetians in 1723 during the Avar attacks, which failed to capture it. Built at the end of the 16th century, Ananuri was a key stronghold on the Georgian Military Highway and a popular stop for travelers, positioned at the confluence of the Aragvi and Wajathevi Rivers.
  • Russian Georgian Friendship Monument - Friendship of Nations Arch - The breathtaking view from the Cross Pass at this unique architectural site leaves no one unmoved. The arch, standing at an altitude of 2384 meters, offers a vantage point where visitors can truly appreciate the majestic Caucasian rocky landscape.
  • Gergeti Trinity Church - Kazbegi (Stepantsminda) - Frequently celebrated in the works of various writers, Kazbek is Georgia’s second highest peak after Shkhara. The area of Stepantsminda is home to the Gergeti Trinity Church, a 14th-century temple. The construction of this temple is particularly noteworthy as all materials were manually transported to its lofty location.

Additional Information

Exploring Stepantsminda (Kazbegi) - Stepantsminda, known as Kazbegi till 2007, is the primary large town on the Georgian Military Highway on the Georgian side. Kazbegi’s attractions encompass both natural and man-made landmarks that are a must-see. The ancient Mount Kazbek, in fact, is a dormant volcano, last active around 2500 years ago. The Gergeti Church, set against the backdrop of Kazbeg, is not merely a picture-perfect postcard view, it’s an essential sight that asserts one’s journey to Georgia. The structure itself is quite austere and does not abound with lavish embellishments or architectural wonders. The journey around Kazbegi reveals the mysteries of the four valleys.

Interesting tour. Good... - Interesting tour. Good guide. Only pity is you get cramped into a minibus with as many seats as possible so no legroom at all. Would have booked different operator had I known, even if it came at an extra cost given the time you spend in the bus.
