Additional Information

Mtskheta, a historic city in Georgia, situated about 20 kilometers north of Tbilisi at the meeting point of the Aragvi and Mtkvari rivers, is one of the country’s oldest settlements. In recognition of its ancient landmarks and historical relevance, UNESCO declared Mtskheta a World Heritage Site in 1994. Archaeological evidence suggests human habitation here dates back earlier than 1000 BC. Mtskheta served as the center of the early Georgian Kingdom of Iberia from the 3rd century BC to the 5th century AD. It holds a key role in the history of early Christianity and was where Christianity became the official religion of Georgia in 337. Georgian Christian architecture’s prominent landmarks, like the 11th-century Svetitskhoveli Cathedral and the 6th-century Jvari Monastery, are located in Mtskheta.

Excellent introduction to Georgian history. - This is our introduction to Georgia history. The tour is well organized. We visited the main area of Old Mtskheta and Tbilisi: Jvari Monastery, Anchischati Basilica, Svetitskhoveli Cathedral, Narikala Fortress, Abanotubani district, Freedom Square, and European Square. Along the way the guide tell us about Georgian history, Orthodox Christianity, invasion by various civilizations, the formation of Georgian identity, up to contemporary Georgia. The tour is excellent introduction to Georgia. We are lucky to have Khatia as our guide. She is knowledgable and friendly. She is responding well to our questions, and catering to our needs, including finding a good restaurant for lunch. I would highly recommend Colour Tour of Georgia and the Old Tbilisi and Mtskheta Tour.
