Highlights
  • Dion Archaeological Park - The distance is 90km and lasts approximately 1 hour.

We reach Dion and we visit the archaeological site, walking back in history and admiring the various findings around the ancient park. The unique statues, the mosaics and the various artifacts that were brought to light are left in their original place and that so, we pass through the same paths as the ancient Greeks used to do. Don’t miss the chance to visit the ancient theater with the perfect acoustic balance since antiquity. Until nowadays many ancient tragedies are revitalized by modern actors and various festivals every year. Next we visit the modern museum with many statues and findings of the ancient city with more characteristic the Hydravlis (an ancient wind instrument) and the unique mosaic that represents the “Villa of Dionysos” lying in the building next to it.

  • Litochoro - Later on we head to Olympus, the mountain of the 12 Gods and we enjoy a 20′ trekking through the Gorge of river Enipeas, above the village of Litochoro. According to the mythology, Enipeas was the most beautiful among the river gods. The path is magical; let the glory of nature, the running waters, the picturesque wooden bridges, the green banks and the small canyons charm you. We have the chance to admire the view of this “divine area” which was chosen carefully by the 12 Olympian Gods as their residence. More specifically, it is said that the residence of the Olympian Gods were the canyons of the mountain, the “mount folds” as they are described by Homer, where their glorious palaces were also located.
Our day trip ends in the picturesque village of Litochoro where we enjoy our lunch in a beautiful traditional restaurant.

Stunning day in the mountains - Superb and well organized tour. Very great and easy hike in Enipeas Gorge, stunning scenery, and a very cool stop by Dion archaeological site! This tour would have benefitted from an hour more in Litochoro to help accommodate time for a meal and more time to explore the town and possibly swim- the town was gorgeous and I wish we had more time there. Our tour guide was highly knowledgeable and very friendly, and helped make travel comfortable for elder visitors. Highly recommended!

A magical day spent near the home of the gods - We enjoyed every minute of our trip to the Dion Archeological site and museum, follow by a trip to the tiny village of Litochoro which is nestled at the base of the majestic Mt. Olympus and short trek into Epinea Canyon. Our guide, Rita provided us with many insights regarding the history, culture and mythology of Greece, Thessaloniki, Dion and the mountain itself.

Beautiful archaeological and natural surroundings - Really enjoyed walking around the ancient site of Dion. As well as being a very interesting ancient site the surroundings are beautiful. The site is under Mount Olympus, surrounded by trees, wild flowers and water. Many birds could be seen and heard.

Great day out - A great day out from Thessaloniki. The first stop was for a hike in the Epihea gorge. The trek involved a 20 min walk through the town of Litochoro where the bus parked. The walk was mostly uphill but not too strenuous. Then when we got to the gorge, it was a 20-25 min walk along a level path (with a few steps) to the end where you can see the waterfall. Then back again to the coach for the next stop at Dion Archealogical Park. We were allowed just over an hour and a half, and I think this is too short. We are brisk walkers and we only covered about 90-95% of the park. I think you need 2 hours here. The City ruins were great to see but the other half was a bit disappointing. Finally we then went to the museum (2 mins drive away) and lunch in a traditional taverna (own cost). The museum was ok, great to see the best of the statues and artefacts taken from the Dion site. We had an hour and a half for lunch and museum which was about right. WE got back into Thessaloniki at about 5pm so in total the day was 8 hours.
