Tomar and its singular Convent of Christ, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site, embody a rich history and an exquisite collection of art and architecture that is a must-see.
Surprisingly, this captivating medieval Portuguese town emerged as the informal new base for the formidable and influential Knights Templars just after their disbandment following the Vatican’s decree in the 14th century. The knights assumed a new identity as the ‘Order of Christ,’ and one of its Grand Masters played a key role in the era of Exploration. He was known as Henry the Navigator. In a later historical event, in 1581, the birth of the Iberian Union, leading to the establishment of the largest empire of that period, occurred at the Convent of Christ.
We will take you on an exploration of the Convent of Christ and the Tomar Castle, introduce you to the Jewish synagogue, offer a taste of contemporary Tomar’s charm, and escort you to the picture-perfect Almourol Castle, nestled on a small isle in the Tagus River.
