Additional Information

Cathedral Valley is one of those places that visitors always end up asking “Where is that?, why didn’t I see that when I visited Capitol Reef?”

The reality is, though some of its most awe-inspiring features are included in promotional photos and literature, access to the region is not something a new visitor to the park in a rental vehicle would be advised to embark on. It is, however, one that is highly recommended to any visitor who wants to experience the true heart and soul of Capitol Reef.
We offer two options for this tour: 1. Half Day and 2. Full Day.

  1. Half-day tour will take you to the most beautiful and iconic features of Capitol Reef: Temple of the Sun, Temple of Moon, and The Glass Mountain. You will see grand vistas of the colorful Bentonite and Mancos Shale, Mars-like formations.
  2. Full-day is an 8-hour long trip that will take you on a 60-mile Cathedral Valley loop to all 8 destinations detailed in the tour’s itinerary of the “What to expect” session below.
  • Not recommended for visually impaired travelers

Great Day in Capitol Reef NP - Mel was a great host, and we are so glad he was doing the driving. The tour gave us an opportunity to see the backcountry high desert region of Capitol Reef NP, including the Cathedral Valley. Wonderful day spent in the park. Glenn & Margie

Great experience - Great tour of the areas of Capital Reef you just can’t see without a 4x4. Picked up at our lodging and on a dirt road within minutes to experience sunrise at Temple of the Sun. Very knowledgeable and personalized to stop and take pictures where we wanted. Thanks for the great tour!

Great Adventure! - What a fun afternoon! Jenny was fabulous! We saw so many amazing sights and laughed and learned all day! Moonscape’s beauty took our breath away, then we traveled to Mars! We learned about seashell fossils and dinosaur bone fragments, and climbed Dolomite hills. Jenny was a gracious and enthusiastic guide! We had a blast!

OUTSTANDING Full day tour of Cathedral Valley in Capital Reef Nat'l Park - Cathedral Valley Loop Tour We booked an 8-hour private tour with Meridian Tours on 23 April to explore this less accessible Cathedral Valley area of Capital Reef Nat’l Park. The tour was about 75 miles long in a beautiful, air-conditioned jeep that went to many different areas. It included a short hike to Temple of the Stars, and several other stops at incredible overlooks and vistas. It also included an optional delicious lunch stop. Mel, our tour guide (and owner), did an OUTSTANDING job showing us all the sights and pointing out many significant sights we would have never seen or appreciated if we tried to do this on our own. He was very personable and easy to understand. He was easy to talk to, answered our many questions as well as provided local history of the Capital Reef area. Mel’s thorough knowledge of geology, and the science behind the creative & erosion forces that created this magnificent place added so much more to this tour. There is so much to see, and Cathedral Valley / Capital Reef Nat’l Park have many significant features that are awe inspiring and likely exist in few places on earth. DO NOT HESITATE to book this tour or other tours directly with Meridian Tours. Meridian also offers unique star gazing tours. Our tour was incredible, and I would say the best tour of this type we have ever experienced. We have toured about 40 National Parks over many years, and this Capital Reef National Park is on par with, and in some respects better, than the Grand Canyon, Bryce Canyon, Zion, and Arches. No Better Way To Spend A Day - We covered a lot of interesting territory. Our guide was knowledgeable, friendly and fun to spend time with. We came a way with a very good understanding of what this beautiful part of the country has to offer. I am a red rocks junkie. This country is but far the most interesting.
