A great day of history, culture and sightseeing - We had a great day with Fahmi, our guide, and Osama our driver who was always where we needed him and made us feel at ease. Picked up on time, air conditioned comfortable transport, very knowledgeable and entertaining guide who made the trip really interesting and gave us a great history of what has made Tunisia the country it is today. The visits to the different sites of Carthage, Sidi Bousaid and the medina of Tunis were a perfect day trip and traditional Tunisian lunch was delicious, enjoyed the Brik especially. Fahmi tailored the tour to our needs, thanks for a great Tunisian experience.

Exceptional! Great guide - Amazing day ! The taxi driver was nice, careful on the road and spoke French, pleasant and air-conditioned car! The guide was exceptional, he knew a lot of things, interesting explanations! He was kind, accompanied us and gave us free time at times to buy some souvenirs. The meal was simple but good. Memories that will last a long time for our mother and daughter stay. Thanks again to our guide and driver!

Nice views, no guided tour, pushy shopkeepers and hidden fees. - All day trip to Tunis / Cathage / Markets / Sidi Bou Said Hillside (Blue & White buildings) TL;DR - Not what I imagined 3/5 stars Pros: easily set up through the hotel, decent price for the amount of travelling food and places visited, beautiful views. Cons: lots of been driven around different locations, no guided tour, hidden fees, aggressive/pushy shopkeepers. My partner and I prebooked this tour from the reception of the hotel that we were staying at (Hammamet Gardens) for 433 Dinar for the two of us (around £110). The price covered the full day tour of Tunis Capital / Cathage ruins / Markets and Sidi Bou Said Hillside (Blue & White Buildings). Whilst booking we were told that meals and entrance fees were covered by the price and that we wouldn’t have to pay anything else. We were also advised to not accept any sales at face value and always haggle down for better prices on things if you wish to buy something at the markets. Cathage Ruins We were greeted at 10am by our driver who spoke little English in an old Mercedes 4x4 and taken off to our first destination of the Cathage ruins which was roughly an hour drive from our hotel. Upon arrival we’re immediately greeted by what looked to be a friend in cahoots with the driver who ran a gift shop opposite the ruins. He introduced himself to us and asked us to come and visit after our visit of the ruins. (First alarm bell starts to go off in my head). We were then swiftly ushered inside the ruins by our guide who left us and went back to the car and told him to meet him again within 50 minutes. Now left to our own devices, we were then pounced on by an elderly man after the entrance who tried to give us a guided tour, which we declined. The ruins were lovely to see and it was a nice step back in time to see some nice monuments, great views of the landscape and Roman ruins - though having been to much of Italy myself, a lot of it wasn’t anything really new to me nor did it blow me away that much. After we’d made our way around the grounds we’d soon found that our 50 minutes were up and we hadn’t even been that slow to walk around them, as such we missed out on visiting the museum there as well and had to head back to our driver. Upon returning the shopkeeper quickly ushered us into his shop and had us browse his wares. We were after a couple of souvenirs so went along with him. Everything was so overpriced though. We ended up seeing a nice necklace and pair of earrings that my partner liked so started the haggling process. He pulled out his calculator and typed in 650 dinar - to which his words were “This is silly American price, for you though my friends you only pay 500!” (£125). The necklace in case was very obviously a cheaply made item that would be sold at many a souvenir shop, made for pennies in a sweatshop in China, no doubt. We stressed that the price was too high and after much back and forth we got him down to 100 dinar (£25). At this point the man was quite overbearing and we felt like we had to simply pay the man and get out of his shop so we could carry on with our day. Looking back on this I wish we’d simply said no and walked away. The driver didn’t help or intervene in the slightest which leads me to believe he’s in some kind of deal with the hotel, shop keepers and tour company to get yuppies like us in to make money. Sidi Bou Said Hillside: Next up, we headed to Sidi Bou Said which was probably 15-30 minutes drive. Upon arrival we’re hounded by another shop keeper who the driver seemed to know as well as he perched up on a stool in the man’s shop and left us to be talked at by the shopkeeper. My partner wished to buy some souvenirs so managed to haggle down a couple of key rings for 20 dinar (£5) which was really a price I’d expect to pay normally back in the UK. After our purchase the shopkeeper tells us to go through the marketplace and towards the hillside views and suggests to come back to our driver within an hour. The blue and white buildings along the hillside are certainly very beautiful and picturesque, with a very Greek feel to them. We took some pictures and soon found ourselves returning back to the car in about 30 minutes. On our return we tried to get more souvenirs and the items were still ridiculously overpriced. One man was charging around 160 dinar (£40) for a small box of 6 varied spices and Olive Oil! We decided to hastily exit his shop and make for the car before someone else hounded us. Restaurant: Back at the car now and after having quite a bitter taste in our mouth from the experience of the markets, we asked to be taken to the restaurant where our free meal was included. This drive took another 15-30 mins or so to get there and along the way the driver used Google translate to try and organise extras for us with our meal (more drinks, desserts, etc) we declined and I stressed the fact it was already covered on our price we paid and wished to spend no more. We arrived at the restaurant which while did look nice, was in a very strange and run down area that seemed to be in the middle of nowhere. We were seated and our meal came swiftly to us. First up was a soup with mixed side dips and bread which was tasty. Then came a small pasta dish which was quite filling and equally as tasty. We thought this was our full meal but to our surprise a third course arrived with a grilled fish and assortment of side salad. We were happy with it all and our driver came over to the table to pay for us. He swiftly slapped down a 20 dinar (£5) receipt and explained that we had to pay for the soup for some reason. At that point I wasn’t in any mood to argue for £5 and simply paid the amount and we left. As we got back into the car we were asked if we wanted to go to Tunis capital as well and we politely declined as we were really done with the day by this point, feeling robbed of our money and taken advantage of we simply asked to be taken back to our hotel. All in all, the trip was good to get out of our hotel and explore Tunisia a bit further afield to places that weren’t within walking distance and got some lovely pictures to remember our visit to Tunisia with but the experience with the shopkeepers, hidden fees and overall lack of an actual tour guide really did sour the experience. If you plan on doing something similar, be sure to practice your bartering skills, don’t be afraid to say no and pack extra money as there’ll no doubt be some hidden fees somewhere!
