Highlights
  • Salina Turda - The Turda salt mine was included in an international circuit of European salt mines from the UNESCO patrimony.

The salt mine has been getting international media coverage as well. It was featured in Architectural Digest in 2016 as an example of a mine conversion into an underground amusement park. The salt mine was also featured on Business Insider in 2015, as “an incredible amusement park” and on CNN, which presented “stunning views” from the park. The underground site had another moment of international fame when Jared Leto, the lead singer of the 30 Seconds to Mars group, posted a link on Twitter about it.

The Turda salt mine is unique in the world for its cone-shaped excavation areas, which were customary at the beginning of the salt extraction activities, and also has trapeze shaped ones. The mine was opened during the Middle Ages, and it was first mentioned in a 1271 document issued by the Hungarian chancellery.

  • Sibiu - Nicknamed The Town with Eyes (given its historical buildings with partly open rooftops), the town is a well-known tourist destination for both domestic and foreign visitors. Known for its culture, history, gastronomy or local cuisine, and diverse architecture, which includes the iconic houses with eyes that gave Sibiu its nickname, the town has garnered significant attention since the beginning of the 21st century.

In 2004, its historical center began the process of becoming a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Sibiu was subsequently designated the European Capital of Culture in 2007, a title which it shared that year along with Luxembourg City as well. One year later, it was ranked “Europe’s 8th-most idyllic place to live” by Forbes. In 2019, Sibiu was named the European Region of Gastronomy. Sibiu hosted the European Wandering Capital event in 2021, the most important tourist wandering event in Europe. A European Union summit was also hosted by the town in 2019.

Tour Guide Radu Rocks! - Our tour guide was Radu and he was amazing! We actually got picked up in Bucharest and it was a one day trip to the Turda Salt Mine and back to Bucharest, which is what we wanted. Turda Salt Mine was quite a sight and is worth a visit if you are up north already. We scheduled another tour trip with Radu several days later to the Slanic Prahova Salt Mine and that was absolutely stunning, amazing, and breathtaking! He also took us to the Snagov Monastery, which is the burial place of Vlad the Impaler, it is worth a visit! Radu is absolutely a great tour guide with great suggestions and options!

Relaxing Great time! - Turda Salt Mine is five hours away from Bucharest- So booking a this tour guide was amazing! Radu was so great, he was our personal driver and there was never any feeling of the time not being our own. Stops when we wanted along the way and answers to all of our questions! He personally walked us into the mine and showed us where everything was! Then gave us as much time as we wanted to explore! I can recommend him and the tour company to anyone going!!!

Nice but... - I came a long way to visit this place and I must say that I liked it even if there were things that made me smile like the presence of a soccer field inside the mine. Okay, I played a game of mini golf several meters underground. The nice surprise was the possibility of taking a rowing boat trip in the underground salt lake.

Huge Disappointment! - We attempted to visit the Turda Salt Mine site outside of Cluj. It was a big disappointment and I was turned away. My problem is I’m using a knee scooter after some surgery on my leg. Before going, I looked for information for handicap accessibility. The website posted on the main page that it was accessible. After reviewing videos of the place, it looked like a good place to go. Still when we arrived and we asked the cashier about this she said that it was not handicap (wheelchair or scooter) accessible. So I wasted my time going here. They seriously need to update their webpage to reflect reality. There was also an issue where if you are late by 1 minute to the gate after you scan your parking ticket, you have to pay a minimum of an hour. It’s not much, but given I wasn’t even able to get in, it’s disappointing. It also looked like the few handicap parking spaces were being filled by customers who didn’t have handicap documentation posted in the window.
