Mount Abu
‘Mount Abu’ is believed to be named after the son of the Himalayas, signifying its origin from ‘Arbuada’, the mighty serpent who saved Nandi, Lord Shiva’s venerated bull, from a deep pit.
The region of Mount Abu has been a dwelling for numerous hermits and saints. The most renowned among them was Sage Vashishtha, who is said to have created four agnikula Rajput clans from a fire-pit through a ‘yagna’, or fire ritual, to defend the earth from demons.
The sacred ritual was conducted near a natural spring located beneath Mount Abu, which flows from a rock resembling the head of a cow, thus the place is known as ‘Gaumukh’.
