Highlights
  • Parque Nacional Marino Ballena - Marvel at the sight of whales and dolphins as they break the surface of the water. This park is a preferred destination for humpback whales and various dolphin species. Depending on the time of year, the park becomes a natural stage for observing these creatures. Humpback whales visit annually to complete their reproductive cycles at a location in the park with a rocky and sandy formation that resembles a whale’s tail. This unique feature is the park’s main highlight. Within the park, you can explore the tombolo (whale’s tail), stroll along the beaches, or go snorkeling or scuba diving to witness a diverse array of marine life. You can also enjoy the tranquil ocean waters that lap these shores or take a boat tour to nearby islands. Besides humpback whales, the waters are home to species like the spotted dolphin, bottlenose dolphins, manta rays, hammerhead sharks, parrotfish, and mackerels. Make the most of your visit by enjoying local attractions such as surfing, kayaking, and waterfalls.
  • Punta Uvita - Situated near the relaxed town of Uvita, Marino Ballena National Park is a must-visit for anyone traveling along Costa Rica’s Pacific Coast. Find out everything you need to know for your visit in our guide.
Which came first: the whales or the whale tail?
On Costa Rica’s Pacific Coast, there’s a fascinating case of nominative determinism. Twice a year, humpback whales migrate to the warm waters to mate or give birth. The land setting is pure paradise: palm trees, golden sands, sunshine, and not a single high-rise in sight.
Indeed, the whales are not the only mammals drawn here for mating…
But, when the tides are low in this corner of paradise, the waters recede to reveal something that can only be described as a whale tail.
