Highlights

Cementerio de Trenes

Uyuni - The tour kicks off at 10:30 am from the Andes Salt Expeditions office. Traveling in a Toyota Land Cruiser 4 × 4 WD, we will visit the Train Cemetery, where you can see remnants of steam locomotives from the 19th and early 20th centuries. This spot is perfect for taking artistic photos.

Museo de la Llama y la Sal - Next, we head to the company’s base to use the hygienic facilities, which include 3 bathrooms and showers for both men and women. Here, we also try on our boots for the saltwater visit to see the mirror effect and pick up lunch for the group. We then arrive at COLCHANI, located on the edge of the Salar de Uyuni and home to the Rosario Cooperative, which has 15 rustic salt factories. You can observe the drying of salt in ovens, the crushing of salt, the mixing of iodine with salt, and the packaging of salt in bags for national and medicinal use.

Salar de Uyuni - We then arrive at the vast Salar de Uyuni, covering an area of 12 square kilometers. Here, we will visit the ‘eyes of salt’ (large holes in the salt flat where saltwater emerges under high pressure), the former Playa Blanca salt hotel made entirely of salt, the flags of the world, and the Dakar monument. We will also have a perspective photo session and shoot funny videos with our professional expert driver-guide. Lunch will be served on the salt flat, followed by a 15-minute walk. We will visit salt sculptures like the Hand of God and the salt pyramid, and later observe the mirror effect in the saltwater. We will then cross over 100 km of the salt flat, watch the sunset, and enjoy a snack with red wine, cookies, and Pringles. Overnight stay at the salt hostel includes dinner and rest.

Salar de Uyuni - After dinner, we will return to the Salar de Uyuni, an excellent spot for stargazing. The lack of light pollution, clean air, vast night skies, and breathtaking surroundings make this one of the best places in the world for stargazing. Our stargazing tours are available year-round but are subject to weather conditions and are not conducted on full moon nights due to the brightness affecting star visibility. Check the lunar calendar and stargazing tour plan to make all necessary preparations.

Day 2: Salt Hotel, Sunrise, Cactus Island, Tunupa Volcano

Uyuni - At 5:00 am, we will watch the sunrise from the salt flat, then return to the hotel for breakfast. Afterward, we will visit the Cave of the Galaxies, a now-dry sub-aqueous cavern formed before the freezing stage, resulting from volcanic eruptions in Lake Minchin (now Salar). Unlike typical terrestrial caves, this one features unique calcareous formations created when magma solidified upon contact with water.

Tunupa Volcano - After visiting the island, we will travel about 40 km to the Tunupa Volcano. At the foot of the volcano, on the edge of the salt flat, we will see small groups of flamingos and herds of llamas. We will then drive up to the vehicle parking platform at an altitude of 4200 meters. From there, we will walk to the cave of the mummies on the volcano. An optional 2-hour hike to the first viewpoint offers a panoramic view of the Uyuni salt flat and the volcano’s crater. We will then return to Uyuni, concluding the tour between 5:00 pm and 6:00 pm.

Perfect tour guide - We did a 2 day/1 night tour in Salar do Uyuni. Our guide was called Eduardo and we also spoke to Bráulio and Wendy at times. The tour was absolutely fantastic. Everything was so carefully prepared. Eduardo, the guide made a real difference, you could tell he was very prepared and so competent. He’s given us all the support and information we needed, he was also friendly and understanding. The hotel was comfortable, with comfy beds and hot shower, great food and plenty of space. I’d highly recommend them, we’ll have wonderful memories of this trip.

Magical place with spectacular guides - We stayed 2 days and one night, and the trip was spectacular. The guide Juan and the driver Blas made the experience even more amazing, always attentive, with good advice and making the experience unforgettable. They gave him as much enthusiasm and enthusiasm as if it were his first time there, and thanks to them we made the most of the experience in the salt flat. Furthermore, Juan is a spectacular photographer, he could dedicate himself to it professionally!! On the other hand, the food is delicious, a recognition to the cook!!! The hotel is quite good, the floor of the room is all salt, and some walls!! (There is no coverage, and the WiFi does not work very well, this must be taken into account). If you want to go to the salt flats, I certainly don't think there is a better option than doing it with this company, with years of experience and with workers as involved as Juan and Blas. Greetings from Spain, Nerea&Ramón ❤️

Not to be missed! - Day 1, we started at 9:30 from Uyuni with our great guide Edwin, who took us to see the salt flats, then to see flamingos, and hike up to the volcano Mirador- I was struggling with the altitude but he motivated me to get to the top! Day 2, I was with Brian- the best photographer on the salt flats who took us to the main view points (train graveyard, flags of the world, cactus island) but went out of his way to make sure we got great photos and had a good time! I also did the optional sunrise tour which was beautiful but I'd advise bringing extra socks as they ask you to put on wellies, so your feet get a bit cold! This was the trip of a lifetime for me, and the guides made it even more special- not to mention the lunch was excellent, and catered for vegetarians well!

Excellent - Very good tour, at affordable prices, especially safe. Excellent food and accommodation. Excellent treatment from the guide. Only, we would need to add the drone or professional camera service for night photos, since sometimes not all tourists have professional cameras. But, still, excellent service. A unique experience. Furthermore, I went in mid-May and you could enjoy the mirror effect of the salt flat.

Such a cool experience! - We had a great time with Andes Salt Expeditions (ASE) and our guide Juan! The Salt Flats are truly otherworldly and ASE knows how to show you around. We did the 2 day/1 night tour with an English speaking guide. We did a lot more on our tour than we were anticipating! Our itinerary was: Day 1 Train graveyard Lunch at a salt hotel Perspective photos Hiking on Cactus Island Watch sunset/reflection photos Check in to our Salt Hotel and dinner Day 2 Up at 5 am to take star photos an watch sunrise Breakfast back at Salt Hotel Tour of a calcium mine Lunch in Coqueza Hike up a to view a volcano (3 miles RT, 1263 ft elevation, 14,309 ft max elevation) Drive back (2 hours) to Uyuni Definitely recommend ASE for a visit to Uyuni and the Salt Flats.

Great experience - I had a great time with Andes Salt Expedition, our guide Juan and driver Angel. The trip exceeded my expectations which were already set very high. I liked the fact that the trip was so diverse, experiencing the salt flat, taking photos with the mirror effect (which I thought was not possible as I read online the mirror effect is only available certain months, but as explained by Juan, there are certain pools available all year around) and the perspective photos which was great fun, to the hike we did at Tunupa volcano and visiting the devil’s cave and isla incahuasi. It was great fun, and I ended up in a great group. It was a trip I will always remember.

Simply perfect! - Probably the greatest tour I ever took. The two days are packed with highlights, the timing is adjusted to the travelers, always enough time to enjoy the beauty of this incredible place. Nice overnight stay, good food and surprising snacks. Big shout out to guide Edvin and driver Blas. Those two guys made it an unforgettable experience. Muchas gracias! Saludos de Austria!

Only go for the salt panes - The salt panes were the highlight, especially with super professional photos from Brian. I do not recommend the second day as the company does not bother telling guests that they don't do the sunrise bit in winter or the 2nd viewpoint on the volcano. It seems it is too cold, but given the package deal, this is misleading and too expensive for what you end up getting. And Brian and Henry were super helpful, enthusiastic and kind, but we would say there were primarily drivers providing basic explanations rather than guides in the usual sense of the word in other countries (i.e. who usually provide lengthier and more detailed commentary)
