Additional Information

A decaying labyrinth of streets, ascending from the steps on the Ganges’ western shore, embodies Varanasi, a symbol of the essential India experience. It boasts a storied past; Mark Twain once characterized it as ‘surpassing history, preceding tradition, even more ancient than myth, and it appears exceedingly older than the sum of these.’ Presently, it is recognized as one of the most hallowed locations globally. Known to its followers as Kashi, or the ‘City of Light, where Shiva’s perpetual flame meets the ground,’ Varanasi is deemed the most sacred among Indian sacred journeys, the abode of Shiva, attracting the faithful to cleanse their transgressions. Chronicles of Varanasi date back 8,000 years. The city, endearingly dubbed ‘the city of enlightenment and cremation,’ has consistently been a magnet for spiritual seekers, not limited to Hindus – Buddha himself sojourned here in 500 B.C., following his own enlightenment, bestowing his insights at the nearby Sarnath.
