Cannaregio - Cannaregio
The sestiere of Cannaregio, second only to Castello as an extension and population, probably takes its name from the fact that in ancient times it stood on a reed marsh.
It is not uncommon for the most careful and respectful tourist to witness the few Venetian traditions that survived modernity and the onslaught of tourists.
In fact in Cannaregio you can still meet many bacari, the typical local frequented by the residents, or assist the children and kids engaged in typical games, or even see someone who practices the Voga Veneta. There are many Rowing Associations here, many of which are based in a facility near Campo Sant’Alvise, with equipment for hauling boats in the Lagoon, and can practice practitioners off the canals, where the waters are calmer. and less intrusive motor boat traffic.

The Cannaregio district in Venice is steeped in history and authenticity that often goes unnoticed by visitors. Its beauty and tranquility will take you by surprise. On our journey, we will arrive at Venice’s Jewish community, the ‘ghetto’, the oldest in the world. The term ‘ghetto’ originates from the Venetian Jews, originally a simple place name. Its origin comes from the solidifying of the Ashkenazi (German Jews who were the first settlers here) pronunciation of the word ‘geto’, a term that referred to a foundry (a place for casting molten metal). Prior to 1516, many Jews had been seeking refuge in the city, often fleeing from the countryside due to war. Over time, the Ghetto gained global prominence, welcoming Jews from various diasporic locations, including Germany, Spain, Portugal, and Italy, along with Marranos. You can find five synagogues within short walking distance.
