- Panathenaic Stadium - The Panathenaic Stadium, or Kallimarmaro, is a multi-purpose stadium in Athens, Greece. As one of Athens’ main historic attractions, it is the only stadium globally made entirely of marble.
An initial stadium was constructed on the site of a simple racecourse by the Athenian statesman Lykourgos (Lycurgus) around 330 BC, mainly for the Panathenaic Games. The stadium was unearthed in 1869 and hosted the Zappas Olympics in 1870 and 1875. After renovations, it hosted the opening and closing ceremonies of the first modern Olympics in 1896. Throughout the 20th century, it served various purposes and was again an Olympic venue in 2004. It is the endpoint for the annual Athens Classic Marathon and the final venue in Greece for the Olympic flame handover ceremony to the host nation.
