Highlights
  • Wajima Morning Market - One of the oldest markets in the Wajima region, where an enthusiastic crowd gathers early in the morning. Small shops can be seen trading freshly caught fish from the local ocean, as well as fresh vegetables from the local town. Travelers can interact with local shopkeepers and observe the traditional trading practices of the countryside.
  • Shiroyone Senmaida - Shiroyone Senmaida invites travelers to explore a unique spot featuring numerous steps filled with rice paddies in an arc on Koushuzan Mountain. These steps, numbering around two thousand, create a stunning scene as the green rice fields stretch out against the backdrop of the blue ocean.
  • Okunoto Salt Farm Village - The Okunoto Salt Farm Village in Suzu is the only place in Japan that uses the traditional “Agehama” method for salt production. As the name suggests, a salt field is created by spreading earth on top of bedrock, then adding sand after the earth has solidified. This method, used for over a thousand years, produces natural salt rich in minerals.
  • Myojo-ji Temple - Myojo-ji is the head temple of the Nichiren school of Buddhism in the Hokuriku region, which includes Ishikawa and the surrounding prefectures. The temple is set on sprawling, verdant grounds with a five-storied pagoda completed in 1618 as its centerpiece. Myojo-ji was founded in 1294 by Nichizo (1269–1342), a disciple of Nichiren (1222–1282), the founder of the Nichiren school. Nichiren Buddhism emphasizes the Buddha-nature of the individual, meaning all people have the potential to attain enlightenment in this lifetime.
  • Chirihama Nagisa Driveway - The Chirihama Nagisa Driveway is a sandy beach on the western edge of the Noto Peninsula that is open to cars. Traffic flows in both directions along the 8-kilometer stretch beside the Sea of Japan. The sand is packed enough to support automobiles, motorcycles, and bicycles. Visitors and locals alike often enjoy watching the sunsets over the sea.
