Fun Tour for Everyone - Great workshop! I haven't seen LOTR but I love filmmaking. This was definitely a treat! Well worth a visit. It was cool to see a lot of exclusive displays that aren't shown outside the workshop. Every member of staff was really nice and had great energy. Thought it was neat you can chat with an actual concept artist or sculptor. Highly recommended!!

Highly recommend - Fantastic tour with our awesome guide Harry, informative, funny, and kept you engaged at all times. The kids (11,13,18) absolutely loved it. Having the hands on sections added to the hype. Highly recommend especially if your local, amazing talent right there.

Weta Tour - Excellent tour, we both enjoyed it immensely. Then went to the museum to view the gallipoli exhibition on recommendation of our weta guide. Will recommend to any of our Aussie fiends who visit New Zealand.

Great experience, and not just for LOTR fans! - Easy to book online, informative, knowledgeable and friendly Cave staff and guides. Fantastic, inspiring sculptors, Mark Fry and Kim Beaton and we even got to have a chat with Richard Taylor!

great for movie lovers - would definitely recommend (even for none LOTR fans!) - our tour guide Bianca was fantastic and gave detailed answers to all our questions. Although it’s just a few rooms, there’s enough on display to make for a really interesting tour :)

A bit disappointing - A bit disappointing, exhibits were stunning, but guide spent too much time talking to one or two on less interesting subjects, resulting in less time for hands on a green screen, both were rushed. At 1.5 hours it was a bit long and more seats should be made available.

Just do the cave - not the tour - I really wanted this to be marvellous. I'd been to Hobbiton a couple of days earlier, and was very impressed by how they presented their experience. Weta next I thought! The Cave itself was good, plenty to look at and take photos of. Once you start the tour (which is a slow walk through 6 rooms) you can't take photos of the good stuff. You enter an anteroom first which has a list of all the films that Weta's worked on, you see an Oscar and a BAFTA, so you think cool! Then you go to a room where you watch a film of an actor being made up into a vampire. Then an amazing props room, with life size models from District 9, swords from Narnia, chain mail from LOTR, and others - no photos. Then you enter a room with a working artist - in our case it was a person who made miniatures. He exhorted to get our children to knit, and create craft, as theirs is an industry that is crying out for people to join. Photos could be taken there, as in the next room, which was a chap for who aluminium foil was the bedrock of the Universe. You get a "chance" to create a foil sculpture/whatever. Then you move to the next room - tour's over. For all the props/history/amazing miniatures that have been built/created over the years, there's no sense of that in the tour. Stay in the gift store, use the money for an entrance ticket to buy something amazing. That is a better thing to take away as opposed to the disappointment I felt after the tour.

Underwhelming experience - We expected a tour through working workshops, but the tour is an exhibit experience only and is crammed into a number of relatively small rooms. Our tour guide had a foreign accent, spoke quickly and quietly, and when combined with background music and the noise from other tour groups in the next room (open ceiling space), made it difficult to hear her at times. Some information we were provided was interesting and one room in particular we liked (included sword and armour props), but in general we came away feeling underwhelmed and feel the ticket price is too high, given the overall experience.

Old tired and sad - Old props relating to movies and tv ahows 20 years old. Everythibg is tired and was no tour of the workshop as we thought. We took the more expensive tour pickup with what was promised to be 2 30 min tours if Wellington in their mini bus. The driver pointed out 2 things and the tour was over in 14 mins. He stunk of cigarettes abd did not wabt to do gis job. He was old bored and tired. A bit like the Weta tour itself. Not worth the money and old abd outdated unless you want ti see soneone shaping tinfoil into crude shapes. So sad.
