Get away from the hustle of city life and bike the 42km greenway starting from the vibrant town of Westport, taking you along the scenic Wild Atlantic Way route. The internationally renowned Great Western Greenway offers a dedicated walking and cycling trail, free from traffic, tracing the path of the historic Westport to Achill railway that was decommissioned in 1937. This is the longest off-road cycling and walking trail in Ireland.
The biking trail presents numerous chances to enjoy the breathtaking views and pause at charming villages, pubs and well-known landmarks dotted along the Wild Atlantic Way. The route takes you past some of Ireland’s most stunning mountain ranges and offers spectacular perspectives of Clew Bay and its multitude of islands. Croagh Patrick, Ireland’s sacred pilgrim mountain with its distinctive conical shape, looms south of Clew Bay, standing as a monument to the countless pilgrims who ascended this mountain barefooted to visit the tiny chapel at its peak.
