Definitely worth a visit - Fantastic experience. There is a lot to look at even just on the outside, but don’t stop there! Go inside and see the exhibition of Hundertwasser’s art and other creations, along with various personal photos and documents. The film is also interesting and provides an insight into his philosophy and quirkiness. The Maori gallery was showing a small selection of art by well known Maori artists (I think this exhibition changes from time to time). I was really surprised to see work by such prominent artists in a gallery in Whangarei. It was very pleasant wandering around the afforested roof and cupola, and enjoying the views from there. Unlike a lot of museums and galleries, here you are not required to exit through the gift shop, but it’s worth a look as there is a range of good quality cards/prints and many other items. I think you can get a ticket for the roof or Maori gallery separately if you didn’t want to see everything, but it was our first visit so we got tickets to see it all, and we’re glad we did. People go to Europe to see Hundertwasser’s architecture and art - we are so lucky to have this right here in NZ. Go and visit!

One of the best in New Zealand - By far the most beautiful and impressive art museum in New Zealand. This combination of architecture, nature, modern art and Māori culture is unique. The tours are impressive and very personal. Anyone who comes to New Zealand must have been here.

Very interesting and unusual gallery, introducing fascinating architect and artist with super-helpful staff. - Spectacular and intriguing building based on the principles of Hundertwasser (for example no straight lines!). Great pictures of his from different times, with excellent explanations and very helpful and friendly staff. Interesting contemporary Maori art. Fabulous food at Aqua cafe in the building.

Great - if you enjoy his style of art. - We spent several hours looking over the gallery, roof garden & having a coffee in the restaurant. You can come back in with your ticket/sticker so spending some time looking around, then going out for lunch (it is near a lot of cafes & restaurants) and going back may suit some people. The guides are very helpful and could answer most of the many questions one of our party showered on them. The rood garden is interesting technically & from a horticultural perspective. The guide on when we visited knew most of the plants & a lot about the building. Note you will get wet if it rains on the roof. If you are only casually interested then walk around the building & visit the shop, which is free. There is more art in the shop, albeit small prints, than in the gallery.

An interesting artist to learn about - If you're into modern art, this is a must-see exhibition. We'd not heard of this chap, but his work is on a par with some of the better known European artists of a similar vintage. The place itself is quite remarkable and the main exhibition inside is interesting. The views from the top of the tower are very nice too as an added bonus.

A Little Underwhelming - This is quite a beautiful building. Plenty of parking in and around and you can walk along the waterfront afterward. The inside was not exactly what I was expecting. There are a few areas and each one was a little on the light side for value. I'm not sure that i'd go back but it was an interesting design and got some good photos.
