Must see. - It’s embarrassing to admit but I knew nothing about this place before my visit. However, I am so glad that I went on this tour. It is simply amazing. The site is well set out, the tour guides are informative and the different areas of the mine are unforgettable. You absolutely must visit this site when in Krakow.

Lots of surprises! - Do not hesitate to visit the salt mine in Krakow. You can easily get to and from the destination with local transport. With pre-booked entrance tickets, you stand at the sign and do the guided tour in the language you have chosen, and then let yourself be led down and around for just over two and a half hours (total time). Many stairs down, some up, but mostly transport routes down into the mine's various corridors and rooms. With walking-friendly shoes and as little as possible to carry, the trip will be really pleasant. The guide Jolanta gave us (in English) a very good experience through her way of telling, describing and responding to inquisitive guests.

Salt mine squeeze to surface. - Wow! We visited the Krakow salt mines at 2pm and surfaced 2 hours later. Simply fascinating. Amazing how people could mine at such depths and carve beautiful statues. Unfortunately l have to warn future visitors that at the end of the guided tour you are squeezed into a tiny lift like sardines to go to the surface ! Not a nice experience and nearly spoiled the whole trip….

Who knew salt could be interesting?! - I was a bit worried about the tour as I wasn't sure how claustrophobic it would feel but actually it didn't feel it at all. The experience is worth a visit for the cavern alone; very impressive. Comfortable shoes are a must though! The only down side was having to find our own way back to the car park on leaving the salt mines. We made it back but with a slight detour!

Krakow Salt Mines - The history of the mine is very interesting dating back to the 1600s. The path is very well marked and easy to follow. However, you have to navigate about 800 some steps (350+) to start the tour. There are 40 people in a tour and by the time the last people get to the spot where the guide is speaking, they are pretty much done talking. They have to keep a strict schedule, so cannot wait for anyone behind. Also, our guide was soft spoken, so had to be close to him to be able to hear him. The altar rooms are beautiful and the carvings on the wall were beautiful and worth seeing. However, it was not any different than seeing such statues or carvings above ground. If anyone has been to the Carlsbad caverns, this will be pretty underwhelming. All the things to see are made by human hands. This salt mine is rated as the second best thing to do in Krakow. I would rate it a bit lower. The history is amazing. The natural part of it is either not evident or not covered by the tour. And if you are concerned about going up and down stairs and walking for 3.5 kilometers, I would pull it up on google and see it.

Viator cannot guarantee what local agency will do - Historic, but Not too exciting. Had a half hour delay in departure by local tour agency. Viator does not make it clear that times may change. On a different tour with Viator (Auschwitz) we were told 12 hours beforehand that our departure time moved from 10:15am to 5:50am! Try planning your day!!!!

An unpleasant, unfortunate end to the tour - This is the first time I have written a negative review on Viator and decided to share what happened to heighten awareness. Understood there would be a lot of walking for this tour and was up for that, but the additional long distance walk added to exit the mine ruined the experience. My group had the unfortunate bad luck of being directed to a second elevator to return to ground level. To reach this elevator, we were made to walk an additional kilometer underground. Once there, when we returned to ground level, we had to walk an additional 400 meters back to our parking lot! No directions were given how to get there other than "Walk straight", so some of our group got lost and the rest of us ended up waiting an additional 20 minutes for them to find their way back to the bus. The usual elevator that leaves visitors directly across the street from where buses are parked--about a five-minute walk--was used by other tour groups, but we were not given the option to wait our turn for that elevator. Worst of all, nobody cared about us. I told the tour guide there were a lot of older people in the group and this was not good. His response was, “I have to do what my boss tells me.” While waiting for the lost visitors to return, the driver pointed to the tour group that started one half hour after ours, all getting into their bus. (They exited using the usual elevator). We saw their bus leave, as we continued to wait for lost members of our group to return. What should have been a smooth and easy exit took us an additional 45 minutes! What a fiasco – and all so unnecessary. Ruined the entire experience. April, when I was there, is not high season. My group could have easily waited our turn for the closer elevator. Just be aware, this will no doubt happen again and your group may be the unlucky one. if you go on this tour, you will not have a choice which elevator your group will be directed to return to ground level. For younger people, the additional long walk to the alternate elevator may not be a problem; however, for older visitors (and there are many), this is simply too much after walking around the mine for two hours.
