Highlights
  • Ban Jelačić Square - Our food tour will start at the central square of the city of Zagreb. While the square’s official name is Ban Jelačić Square, locals call it Jelačić plac. It is located right below the old city cores called Kaptol and Gradec. In the 17th century the square was called Harmica, and it was used as a marketplace for the entire town. Today it’s the heart of the city and most of the major events in Zagreb happen at Ban Jelačić Square.
  • European Square - After a very brief walk we will arrive at the European square. The square is overlooked by the cathedral and it often hosts outdoor events, such as craft markets and DJ sets. At the square you will be able to view a miniature model of the city of Zagreb, with all its major locations and streets.
  • Ul. Augusta Cesarca 2 - Our first restaurant will give you a chance to taste a cold appetizer that is based in the Istrian region. You will learn about the wonderful region of Istra, their culinary customs. In the meantime you will taste their wine and a region specific cold dish.
  • Dolac Market - We will continue our walk to the Dolac Market, a farmers market that has been one of the most visited locations in the entire city since 1930. It is a farmers market that holds a deep historical and cultural importance to Zagreb and Croatia in general. Dolac is a combination of a more traditional open market and a sheltered market right beside it.
  • Dolac 2 - Our second restaurant will offer you a chance to taste warm appetizers from the region of Zagreb. These regional dishes and drinks will certainly fill your belly and make the rest of the tour more enjoyable.
  • Tkalciceva Street - Next we will pass through the most vibrant street in Zagreb. Tkalčićeva street is a perfect way to get introduced to the colorful locals of Zagreb, it is a combination of the past and present of Zagreb. We will pass next to countless cafes, smaller restaurants, traditional shops and boutiques.
  • Stone Gate - The Stone Gates are the next location we will visit and it is one of the most important monuments in Zagreb. A place that served as a defense system for Zagreb in the 13th century is now an oath site. The Stone Gate is often visited by people of faith to pray and light candles. The gates truly create a serene atmosphere for all visitors who pass through.
  • Cathedral of Zagreb - The next stop on our journey will be the Zagreb Cathedral. It is a Roman Catholic church that is the second tallest building in Croatia. The Cathedral is created in the Gothic style and its awe inspiring architecture is impossible to ignore, especially its two spires that can be seen from various parts of the city. The cathedral also has a treasury that houses various important religious documents and items.
  • St. Mark’s Square - The next stop is the Saint Marks Square, located in the old town of Zagreb. The square shares a name with a church and it also is the location of the Croatian parliament.
  • Lotrscak Tower - We will then pass one of the symbols of Zagreb, a formidable defense tower from long ago. It is located in Gradec and it’s one of the last remnants of the city’s ancient defense system.
  • Uspinjača - On our way to the third restaurant we will pass the worlds shortest funicular ride, the Uspinjača stairs. It is the first form of public transportation in Zagreb and the world in general.
  • Strossmayer Promenade - This will lead us to the iconic Strossmayer promenade where you can enjoy the best panoramic views of Zagreb. Soak up its romantic vibes while taking the best pictures imaginable.
  • Mesnička ul. 6 - At the third restaurant on the tour you will get to experience a main dish specific to the regions of Zagreb and Zagorje. You will learn about the culinary culture of the city and the country of Croatia itself. Also the restaurant might offer some interesting sightseeing possibilities as it houses various historical replicas and fascinating pictures.
  • Tunel Gric - After the restaurant we will pass through Tunnel Grič located in the city center. Grič in general is a very historic part of Zagreb. The tunnel has a central hall and two passageways. It was built during World War 2 and before being a pedestrian tunnel it was a bomb shelter and a promenade.
  • Krvavi Most - The Bloody Bridge is an infamous street that will lead us to the final restaurant of the day. This street was given that name because of the countless conflicts that happened between the two small cities Kaptol and Gradec. These two cities were later formed into Zagreb itself. While the Bloody bridge is a small street, it held many epic battles between the two cities.
  • Skalinska ul. 5 - Our final destination of the day will offer you a chance to taste a delicious regional dessert that will remain a surprise. You will also taste several regional wines specifically used for desserts.

Worth every minute! - This was more than a food tour. It was a history lesson. Our guide was amazing, kind, knowledgable and gave a tour better than expected. I loved learning more about Zagreb. The food we tasted…was spectacular!! The wine was great! And the cheese was so good. Croatia food is better that any other European country I have visited so far. We got to meet locals along the way and felt welcomed.

Fabulous food tour - We had a wonderful time on our food tour. Our guide, Marin, was engaging, informative, and great fun. He wove stories of Zagreb's history and culture in with delicious food from many regions of Croatia. Although it was an incredibly hot afternoon, Marin deftly guided us through the city and made it feel almost effortless. We learned so much and thoroughly enjoyed the tour. This is a must-do if you are in Zagreb.

Excellent Food, History, and Culture Walking Tour of Zagreb - We had a terrific food walking tour with Gabriella, visiting four different food venues and learning about the history and culture of Croatia and Zagreb in the process. Starting with truffle cheese (truffles from Istria), tasting a typical ground meat dish served at bar-b-ques, feasting on slow cooked veal and homemade gnocchi, and ending with sweet strukli at La Struk, it was all delicious as were the wines (and pear brandy) that were paired with each dish. In addition to the great food, we walked through the Gric Tunnel, learned why there are sharp pointed objects on the tops of buildings (witch catchers), and talked about all the construction going on in Zagreb. Excellent.

Eating your way through Old Town with a great guide - We took this tour on our first day in Zagreb and Croatia and it was a great introduction to the food as well as a good walking tour of Old Town. Dino gave a detailed tour of Old Town and it enabled us to go back another day and see all the sights again. The food was not spectacular but very representative of Croatian culture. The dessert was incredible. He also gave us some ideas on additional places to eat later in the week which worked out very well. Definitely recommend for a first day introduction to Zagreb.

Too hot but happy in Zagreb - The streets were alive at night with cafes and music. The Football (Soccer) was being broadcast at most cafes, and in the streets and in the main square. The people were very respectful and I felt safe walking alone at night. Plenty to choose from with food places from bakeries to top class venues. I found a couple of days to be enough for what the city had to offer. The Botanic Gardens are small. Almost everything closes on Sunday, and I was there on a public holiday as well. It was extremely hot and humid. Happy with accommodation at well located Hotel Dubrovnik.
