Transfer from Tbilisi to Svaneti (Mestia)

Mestia - We will meet at your hotel early in the morning and begin our long and wonderful journey to Svaneti. During our trip, we will pass through three regions of Georgia, making this trip even more memorable. Our first major stop will be at the Enguri Dam, one of the highest arch dams in the world, standing at 271.5 meters tall. Then, we will drive to the region of Upper Svaneti, an outstanding example of a unique mountain landscape with well-preserved villages, distinctive defensive tower houses, and medieval ecclesiastical architecture and art. After arriving in Mestia, we will take you to your hotel for check-in, give you some time to relax, and later, if you wish, we can take you to Mestia city center for dinner. Overnight in Mestia.

Mestia - Chalaadi Glacier

Chalaadi Glacier - Have you ever seen where a river is born? On the second day, we will start our tour by visiting the Chalaadi Glacier, one of the most famous hikes in Mestia. The Chalaadi Glacier is one of the easiest glaciers to reach in all of Georgia. Located just 12 km from Mestia, it is a glacial tongue about 6 kilometers long that begins on the slopes of the Ushba and Chatini massif. It descends along the gorge of the Chalaadi River into the gorge of the Mestiachala River. The first part of the hike to Chalaadi goes through a beautiful mixed forest followed by a rocky path. When the forest ends, the trail leads to the bank of the Chalaadi River, which flows out from under the glacier. The last part of the path consists of walking on large moraine stones.

Mestia - After visiting the Chalaadi Glacier, we will drive back to Mestia, where we will take you to visit one of the “Svan towers.” Svan Towers are the symbol of Svanetia. Nowhere else in the world can you find an analogue of these unique defensive structures from the early Middle Ages, primarily built between the 9th and 12th centuries during the Georgian Golden Age. Svan towers are tower houses built as defensive dwellings. The towers usually have 3-5 stories and are around 25 meters high. After visiting the tower, you can enjoy a meal at some local restaurants. At the end of our day, we will take you back to your accommodation. Overnight in Mestia.

Mestia-Ushguli-Mestia

Ushguli - On the third day, you will depart in our car or a local off-road vehicle to Ushguli, located at the head of the Enguri gorge. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Ushguli is one of the highest continuously inhabited settlements in Europe, featuring an outstanding mixture of mountainous landscape and medieval-type towers and churches. Here, you will be able to visit the Ushguli Ethnographic Museum, located in a 12th-century Svanetian tower-house called the “Love Tower.” You can also visit the medieval Lamaria Church (of the Assumption of the Mother of God) and take unforgettable photos. Overnight in Mestia.

Transfer from Svaneti (Mestia) to Tbilisi

Tbilisi - This is the last day of our trip, and it’s time to drive back to Tbilisi. But don’t worry about the long journey back; we have saved some places for you to visit. On the way back to Tbilisi, we can stop at Martvili Canyon, a place with numerous waterfalls and sky-blue water, where you have the opportunity to take a boat trip and enjoy the beautiful views of the canyon.

Best Georgia Tour Guide Ever - Gogi was a FANTASTIC guide in every sense. He engaged with us, modified plans based on our interests, and had an incredible, deep knowledge of everything we did and every place we visited. He was fun, patient, and tolerant of my singing in the car. He was truly a fantastic guide.

A must do while in Georgia! - We can’t recommend this trip more highly. Svaneti is unmissable! We stayed two nights in Mestia and one night in Ushguli. The landscapes, towers, and food are completely distinct in Georgia. It’s a long journey from Tbilisi but painless when broken up by fascinating stops on the way there and back. Our guide, Gogi, spoke excellent English and had an incredible grasp of history. Even more importantly, he was so easygoing and able to plan perfect days for us on the go. He was also a great driver, which is a huge plus in Georgia. A must do!
