Highlights
  • Kotoku-in (Great Buddha of Kamakura) - Taiizan Kotokuin Shojosenji, or Kötoku-in, is a Jõdo-shu Buddhist temple located in Kamakura, Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan. The temple is famous for its “Great Buddha,” a large outdoor bronze statue of Amida Buddha, which is one of Japan’s most iconic landmarks.
  • Hase-dera Temple - Established in the 8th century, this temple features a beautiful Japanese garden, Buddha statues, a view of the Pacific Ocean, and a unique cave shrine. The hydrangeas are particularly stunning in June and July.
  • Hokokuji Temple (Takedera Temple) - Built in the 14th century, this temple is known for its picturesque bamboo forest, offering a distinct experience compared to other temples in Kamakura.
  • Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine - Serving as a cultural hub in Kamakura, this shrine hosts many of the city’s major festivals and includes two museums. Two scenic ponds symbolize the Taira and Minamoto clans.
  • Kamakura Komachidori - A bustling historic pedestrian street lined with apparel, gift, and souvenir shops, as well as eateries and sweet shops.
  • Yokohama Chinatown - Established around 160 years ago, this area has a population of about 3,000 to 4,000 people. Today, only a few Chinese residents remain, mostly from Guangzhou.
  • Sankeien Gardens - Located in Naka Ward, Yokohama, this traditional Japanese garden opened in 1906. It was designed and built by Tomitaro Hara, also known as Sankei Hara, a silk trader.
  • Minatomirai - We will visit this area if time allows.

Minatomirai is a modern waterfront district featuring a high-rise observation deck and chic boutiques at Yokohama Landmark Tower and Plaza. Families can enjoy the skyline from the Cosmo Clock 21 Ferris wheel or explore the 1930s sailing ship Nippon Maru. The Mitsubishi Industrial Museum offers dynamic exhibits on rockets and submarines, while Rinko Park hosts summer concerts. Upscale bars and restaurants line the waterside promenades.

Disappointing - When we booked this trip, we specifically asked for a driver who was also a guide and knew something about Kamakura. We were assured that would be the case. Our guide, Ali, was a fine driver but he has only lived in Japan for a few years, coming from Pakistan. He knew almost nothing about the places we went or the history of Japan. We might as well have just hired an Uber driver and saved some money.

Do not take this tour - While the temples we saw were amazing, the following happened. The driver did not know the difference between Yokohama and Kamakura. The 1st temple we stopped at he said was in Yokohama, so we did not pay to go in. Later found out it was one of the temples we wanted to see in Kamakura. He used his GPS to try and find the temples which I had to push him to drive to. A lot of time was wasted finding locations, thus we saw Yokohama only very briefly. He did say we could stay later, but due to wasted time, it was too late. As far as a "guide", he was only a driver and did not tell us any history about anything. Expensive wasted money for a driver and guide which guiding was non existent and driver did not know how to find anything. It was his first time attempting to take tourists to this area.
