Highlights
  • Chinese Fishing Nets - Known locally as Cheena vala, these stationary lift nets are a distinctive fishing method in India. These nets are fixed land installations, formally referred to as “shore operated lift nets.” Massive mechanical structures support horizontal nets spanning 20 meters or more. Each setup, standing at least 10 meters high, features a cantilever with a net extended over the water and large stones hanging from ropes as counterweights. Operated by teams of up to six fishermen, these nets are prevalent along the coasts of southern China and Indochina, but in India, they are mainly found in Kochi and Kollam, where they attract tourists. This unique fishing technique was introduced to the region by Chinese explorers in the 14th century.

  • Fort Kochi Beach - Located along the Arabian Sea, Fort Kochi Beach is situated in Fort Kochi, a part of the city of Kochi in Kerala, South India.

  • Dutch Cemetery - A notable site in Fort Kochi, the Dutch Cemetery is renowned for its historical significance, housing the graves of Dutch settlers who arrived centuries ago to expand their empire. Consecrated in 1724, it is now managed by the Church of South India and holds many intriguing stories.

  • Church of Saint Francis - St. Francis Church in Fort Kochi, originally constructed in 1503, is one of India’s oldest European churches. It holds historical importance as a silent witness to the European colonial era in the subcontinent. The Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama died in Kochi in 1524 during his third visit to India, and his body was initially buried here before being moved to Lisbon fourteen years later.

  • Santa Cruz Cathedral Basilica - Located in Fort Kochi, the Santa Cruz Cathedral Basilica is one of Kerala’s eight Basilicas. Recognized as a heritage structure, it is one of India’s most impressive churches and attracts tourists year-round.

  • Mattancherry Palace - Also known as the Dutch Palace, the Mattancherry Palace in Kochi, Kerala, is a Portuguese-built palace featuring Kerala murals that depict portraits and exhibits of the Rajas of Kochi. It is listed on the “tentative list” of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

  • Paradesi Synagogue - The Paradesi Synagogue, built in 1568, is the oldest active synagogue in the Commonwealth of Nations. Located in Kochi, Kerala, it is one of seven synagogues of the Malabar Yehudan or Cochin Jewish community in the Kingdom of Cochin.

  • Dhoby Khana Public Laundry - Established in the early 1700s, the Dhoby Khana Public Laundry in Kochi serves as a central location for traditional manual laundry washing. This cooperative facility includes buildings for ironing, concrete wash basins, and a field of clotheslines made from braided coir fiber. The laundry was originally set up during Dutch rule to clean military uniforms, and the workers’ ancestors hail from Tamil Nadu. The community is welcoming and allows visitors to try their hand at using the hot iron press.

  • Indo-Portuguese Museum - Situated in Fort Kochi, Kerala, the Indo-Portuguese Museum showcases the region’s Indo-Portuguese heritage.

  • Bastion Bungalow - Located near Vasco da Gama Square in Fort Kochi, Bastion Bungalow is a notable tourist attraction. This sea-facing Dutch heritage building, constructed in 1667, served as a residence during the British period, with Colonel Macaulay, the Cochin resident in the early 19th century, among its notable occupants.

  • Cochin Thirumala Devaswom Temple - Also known as Gosripuram, this temple is the largest and most significant socio-religious institution for the Gowda Saraswat Brahmins of Kerala. Located in Cherlai, Mattancherry, the temple was established in the late 16th century and is central to the history of the GSB community in Kerala.

Best Tuk-Tuk Tour in Kochi... Highly Recommended... - Everything we expected of a Tuk Tuk tour. Met our tuk-tuk drivers Aslam and Haneef at the port entrance and commenced a thrilling four hour journey round Cochin. Blimey those Tuk Tuks can get into tiny gaps! We saw all the major sights of old Cochin but to be honest it was a little underwhelming. If we had done this tour as a coach trip we would have been disappointed! AMAZING TOUR GUIDE!! so fun and friendly!! He took us to all these amazing places. So funny and friendly!!!! I will make sure to book with him next time whenever I get back in kochi!! Wow!! thank you!! I will tell all of my friends about him! Truly one of my highlights while traveling in kerela. Truly a kind and sweet soul.
