extbf{Obidos} stems from the Latin term 

opiddum, signifying a

extbf{fortified city}. Successively inhabited by the Visigoths and Moors, it was eventually reclaimed by Portugal's inaugural monarch, King Afonso Henriques, in 1148. The town's ramparts bear the imprints of its historical inhabitants, perched atop a hill offering panoramic views of the 

extbf{Obidos Lagoon} on one side and the 

extbf{Usseira Aqueduct} on the other. 

The main thoroughfare of

extbf{Obidos} guides visitors from the 

extbf{Porta da Vila} gateway to the 

extbf{Castle}. The architecture along this route retains the authentic character of

extbf{Fort of São Miguel Arcanjo} in 

extbf{Nazaré}, Western Portugal, stands as a beacon of maritime guidance. This cylindrical, vivid red, iron beacon features a service balcony and is affixed to the fort's wall. Its beacon cycles with a rhythm of two seconds illuminated, followed by one second of darkness.
