Highlights

PAK OU CAVE, KUANG SI WATERFALL, & THE BEAR SANCTUARY (L)

The Pak Ou Cave and Kuang Si Waterfall are situated to the north and south of Luang Prabang city, respectively. This tour will take you to both, with a picturesque drive along the Mekong River in between.

Meet your guide early in the morning for a forty-minute drive to Pak Ou Village, where you can explore the various crafts made by the locals before crossing the mighty Mekong River by a small boat to the base of a limestone cliff, the location of Pak Ou Cave. The lower cave is impressive, filled with Buddhist statues and relics. Take your time to explore the sacred scene, scented with burning incense and overlooking the stunning Mekong landscape. Climb a winding series of stairs, grab a flashlight, and you’ll discover another fascinating and easily navigable cave with ancient Buddhist relics.

Afterward, we’ll cross the Mekong again by boat and continue with a 1.5-hour drive downriver to the renowned Kuang Si Waterfall. On the way, we’ll stop at the popular Whiskey Village to sample the locally made Lao Lao. The jungle surrounding the waterfall remains lush and beautiful year-round. The waterfall transitions from calm, turquoise waters during the dry season to impressive, roaring falls during the rainy season. Either way, you’re in for a refreshing and beautiful nature experience. Integrated into the landscape is an Asiatic Bear Sanctuary, where you can see these magnificent creatures up close and support efforts to care for the animals in the area.

We’ll conclude this full day with a return drive to Luang Prabang in the late afternoon, just in time for your evening activities.

Note that the stairs into the lower Pak Ou Cave, which contains thousands of Buddhist statues, are short but steep. Access to the upper cave is via a fairly long series of stairs and can be taken at your own pace.

Waterfall is a must see! - Did a 4 hour trip to the waterfall and did not know about the bear rescue centre till we got there. Mixed feelings on this as I hate to see big wild animals in cages but if they have been rescued then it's a good thing as long as it's not a zoo type situation. The waterfalls are really nice the big one is pretty amazing. We did a bit of a climb to the steps and then had a lovely ice cold swim. There are those fish that like to see if your tasty though! Not biting or anything but they make you jump 😆 We'll with a visit

Do visit! - I would definitely say to anyone - do visit the Bear Sanctuary and please do support the project - it's the last hope for these beautiful, charming beings who are under massive threat from poaching. It's a centre to learn about these magnificent and yet vulnerable creatures who really need our help. So do visit and please do support!

Tuk tuk ride - We took a private tuk tuk ride to the waterfall and bear rescue centre. It was a further distance than we thought and if you have a bad back don’t go with a tuk tuk but it was a great deal cheaper. It had been raining and the waterfall wasn’t blue but we did get warned that would happen after the rain. Did see plenty of the bears but the enclosures were a bit dingy but I suppose the bears were better in their enclosures than being stuck in a cruel cage. We decided not to go to the caves and were back at Luang Prabang within 3 hours.
