- Viana, Cape Verde - Embark on a picturesque drive out of town through the Calhau valley to visit one of São Vicente’s extinct volcanoes! The Viana volcano, situated 14 kilometers southeast of Mindelo, the island’s capital, stands at an altitude of 163 meters and is located 3 kilometers south of Calhau. Traverse the desert landscape to reach Viana, where you’ll ascend a path of volcanic rocks to the crater. The view from the top is stunning, offering a panoramic vista of the crater, the village, and the nearby islands of Santo Antao, Santa Luzia, São Nicolau, as well as the Branco and Raso islets, visible on a clear day.
