Highlights
  • Lake Chuzenji - Nestled within Nikko National Park to the west of Nikko, Lake Chuzenji stands as Japan’s highest natural lake. It was formed around 20,000 years ago when the Daiyo River was blocked by lava from an eruption of nearby Mt. Nantai. The lake sits at an elevation of 1,269 meters.

  • Kegon Falls - Located in Nikko city, Kegon Falls is a 97-meter-high waterfall fed by Lake Chuzenji. As one of Japan’s three tallest waterfalls, Kegon Falls features an elevator that allows visitors to experience its powerful cascade up close.

  • Akechidaira Observation Area - Perched atop the Nikko Daini Irohazaka Route, Akechidaira offers a ropeway ride to an observation deck with breathtaking views of Mt. Nantaisan, Lake Chuzenji, and Kegon Falls.

  • Nikko Tosho-gu - The Toshogu Shrine in Nikko is the final resting place of Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of the Tokugawa Shogunate, which ruled Japan for over 250 years until the end of the Edo Period in 1868. This shrine complex is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and your guide can share intriguing stories about its architecture as you explore.

  • Nikko Tamozawa Imperial Villa Memorial Park - Built in 1899 as a summer residence for Emperor Taisho, this villa features a beautiful garden and is a rare example of former royal family housing that is open to the public.

Snowy Day in Nikko - This was our first visit to Japan and our first tour. Our English speaking driver was not a Japanese local. He tried his best but we felt it may have been his first time running this tour of Nikko Full-day. He kept using his phone to navigate to places, and one time he was heading onto expressway, only to realise he made an incorrect turn and reversed back. At times he was unsure of entry to some places. He was a friendly, patient, helpful and pleasant driver, but he gave us no indication of time to look around. His knowledge was not very extensive of the history. One point I felt he repeated the overview information about the tour. Communication was lacking, between us both. I asked numerous times, how long do we have at each place and no response was given. At the end of the day, I had messages, stating, ‘how much time are we spending here’, ‘we need to manage our time to visit other places’. If we knew what time we had, we would have been on his schedule, but he never told us how long. The first place we visited, we had no idea if we were to pay entry into the shrine or not. We did enjoy the places we visited, yet we experienced quite a heavy snow fall, one which we were not expecting. We were disappointed from some aspects of the day and had limited time to book with this company, as the booking we had originally made cancelled us two weeks prior to our travel. At the time of booking there were no reviews. I believe if the guide gained more knowledge of the areas visited and gave an indication of time at each place, there would be potential that I would rate higher. All the best to him for his future marriage.
