Highlights

The weaving and construction techniques have passed from generation to generation since the bridge was first built by the Incas. It is the only remaining example of an “Inca” hanging bridge that can be seen today.

The trip begins in the city of Cusco we will pick up you of your hotel at 6:30 a.m. approximately with south-west direction. After almost two hours, we will arrive at the Apurímac river and the impressive Inca bridge. This hanging Inca bridge is made of vegetable fiber (Ichu) and is located on the Apurímac River in the district of Quehue. The existence of this bridge dates from the Inca times, the renovation and maintenance is done once a year by the local people of the four communities that are around. Before beginning with the renewal of the bridge an offering is given as a sign of respect and gratitude to the Pachamama.

After that, we will visit the four lagoons: Pomacanchi Lagoon, Acopia Lagoon, Laguna Asnaqocha and the Pampamarca or Tungasuca Lagoon. Along the way we will have our picnic, enjoying the magnificent view. After enjoying a quiet moment near the lagoons, the next place we will visit will be the small volcano of pavilions that is located near the town of Yanaoca.

Additional Information

Embark on a truly unparalleled journey. The Q’eswachaka bridge, dangled above the Apurimac river at an altitude of approximately 3,900m/ 13,000 feet, is nestled in the Canas province. This 120 feet long bridge, intricately crafted from grass, is diligently reconstructed every one to two years in a communal endeavor by the native individuals of the area.

The artistry involved in its crafting and construction has been handed down through generations since its inaugural construction by the Incas. Today, it stands as the lone surviving specimen of an “Inca” suspension bridge.

Great tour - highly recommend it - Our guide, Antonio, made this tour exceed my expectations. Not only did he explain the local customs and culture, but he made the entire day a learning adventure. On the way to the bridge, we stopped to buy Oropesa bread straight out of the oven and then made another stop for Coca tea leaves. On the way to and from the bridge, we were able to stop and take scenic pictures as well as speak with the locals. We had plenty of time at the bridge, crossing and recrossing, before stopping for a picnic lunch along a beautiful lake. Antonio walked us through the gratitude ceremony with the tea leaves. A really fabulous start on our adventure.
