Highlights
  • Fagradalsfjall Volcano Eruptions: 2023, 2022, 2021 - The drive to the eruption side on Reykjanes peninsula leads through old lava fields and gives a first impression of the creation of Iceland and the forming of the landscape in this area.
The Hike begins with an overview of the volcanic history on the Reyjanes peninsula and the first signs of a new eruption at this place. At the lava field, we will discover the forming of new land and learn how the composition of the lava influences the appearance of the rocks. The following hike, up to the crater viewpoint will give you a breathtaking view of the lava field and the surrounding area.
The drive back to Reykjavik leads along hot springs, lakes, and mountains through the beautiful landscape of the Reykjanes peninsula.
A volcanic eruption is a natural phenomenon, therefore the activity of the eruption can change quickly and the view of hot glowing lava can not be guaranteed.
The hike takes about 1 hour to 1.5 hours in each direction (2 to 3 hours in total).

Wonderful tour, very knowledgeable tour guide - Amazing hike that took us to lava flows from 2021 that still are venting warm air. Our tour guide, France, who is from Australia was incredibly knowledgeable and is an experienced geologist and volcanologist. It’s obvious she enjoys guiding the tours and it was a pleasure to be with her. My daughter who is a rock hound was in heaven on this trip.

Lunch & Lava - Well that was extraordinary. Hiking up to a three year old lava field with the Grindavik volcano erupting constantly in the background! Amazing view of that from on top of the wee mountain you hike up- it is quite a steep hike- be advised. Stand on three year old lava, and feel the heat through the soles of your feet! Our young geologist guide- Giuseppe - is very enthusiastic about his subject, and geology and volcanoes are obviously a passion for him which showed through. Thanks to all- that was more amazing than I thought - now seen an erupting volcano with these eyes!! For me that was a life ambition, now fulfilled. Still quite jazzed by the experience. Hope those who follow enjoy it the same.

Superior experience - Due to weather we were offer the alternative of hiking in a lava tunnel with a Geologist. France picked us up at the agreed upon time and location. She was fantastic, interesting conversation, plenty of details and information as well as knowledge of the area, very experienced and conscious tour guide. Absolutely elevated experience and great communication with the tour operator. Well done France and Jasmin. Thank you.

Awesome volcano hike to a lava flow - Fransie (sp?), was our guide for this incredible tour to the volcano/lava fields around Grindavik. Fransie was super knowledgeable about the area and taught us all about the variety of minerals found in lava as well as different types of flows. We hung on every word. Cold and windy but so worth it. Go! Incredible views abound.

Great volcano hike! - We had a very positive experience on our tour with Fransie in February. We had a gorgeous day, a wonderful hike, and Fransie was a perfect guide. We learned a lot from her. She is very knowledgeable and a natural teacher. She is engaging and very passionate about geology. We loved it. We had a group of 8 take a private tour. The small group and personal instruction were great. She made everyone feel welcome and important and did a great job of connecting with everyone from the youngest to the oldest on a personal level.  Aside from volcanos and geology, she made great restaurant recommendations and thoughts about what to do in Reykjavik. We highly recommend your company and Fransie's expert guiding.

Great experience hiking on the volcano - We had a great volcano hike. Our guide, Giuseppi , was passionate and knowledgeable. We got some good exercise without it being too strenuous and got some great views from the top. Hiking in a lava field was like hiking on another planet, then we found a crack that was still warm 2 years after the lava stopped flowing. Other times, it seemed more like hiking on the moon or Mars. One minor problem: bathroom at the base camp parking lot was closed. We had a lots of fun!

Can’t go near the volcano with orange lava. Disappointed - Not sure why your operator shows pictures of orange lava because that is not where the hike goes. Roads are closed in that area for hiking. My nephews took the hike and did not get close enough to see the orange lava. Big disappointment.
