Highlights
  • Dendera Temple Complex - Your journey begins with a pickup from your hotel in Cruise in Safaga, courtesy of a Marsa Alam tours guide. Following this, you’ll embark on a drive to the Dendera temple, arriving at 08:30. Accompanied by an Egyptologist, you’ll be given a detailed account of the temple’s storied past.

Dendera temple
The Temple of Hathor primarily dates back to the Late Ptolemaic period, with its construction attributed to the era of Ptolemy XII and Cleopatra VII. Subsequent enhancements were made during the Roman era. Despite being erected by rulers not originally from Egypt, the temple’s architecture aligns with traditional Egyptian temple designs, except for the hypostyle hall’s facade, which an inscription attributes to Emperor Tiberius.

Hathor, revered as a deity of healing, is celebrated within the temple complex, which houses a sanatorium. Pilgrims would travel here seeking healing from the goddess.

  • Abydos - The journey continues from Dendera to the Abydos temple. Abydos stands as a pivotal archaeological site in Ancient Egypt, home to numerous venerable temples, including Umm el-Qa’ab, a royal burial ground for early pharaohs. These graves gained prominence over time, and the desire to be interred nearby elevated the town’s status as a religious hub.

Presently, Abydos is renowned for the memorial temple of Seti I, featuring the Abydos King List, a nineteenth dynasty artifact listing Egyptian pharaohs from Menes to Ramesses I. Much of the ancient city, including the Great Temple, lies beneath modern structures north of the Seti temple. Regrettably, many of the initial edifices and their contents are considered lost, with some likely destroyed by ongoing development.

Additional Information

Embark on a personal day trip to the temples of Dendera and Abydos from the port of Safaga. Begin your journey with an exploration of the temple of Hathor, the Deity of Love, Music, and Healing. Then, continue to Abydos to explore the temple of Osiris. For the ancient Egyptians, Abydos was a significant sacred location. Similar to the desire of present-day Muslims to make at least one pilgrimage to Mecca, the ancient Egyptians held a similar aspiration to make a pilgrimage to Abydos, a location they believed to be linked with the gateway to the afterlife.

Nice but from Marsa Alam and a bit of a trek - We had booked for Edu and Kom Ombo but the tours called us to tell us that there were problems on the road and offered us an alternative to Dendera and Abyos and we accepted. She came to take the taxi for us. We left from Marsa Alam and we traveled for almost 5 hours, in Dendera we took the Oshama guide, both the driver and the guide were very good. We first went to Abydos, a temple and a characteristic town. There isn't even an asphalt road but it's beautiful and then we went to the Dendera temple. very beautiful and well maintained. a bit of a trek but good and Marsa Alam tours super correct everything perfect

A tricky Review to Write - This is a tricky review to write. The Temple of Abydos is fabulous. The older buildings are from Seti 1st and the quality of the reliefs is excellent and the original colours are amongst the best in Egypt. The Dendara complex is from the Greco/Roman period. Much of it is in ruin, although there are some nice large scale reliefs of Cleopatra. Our guide, Mandur, was knowledgeable and considerate to our needs and our driver Mohammed, was safe and sure. This tour was from Marsa Alam tours with a pick-up from Safaga Port. Unlike other tour companies, Marsa Alam have no access to the port and so our vehicle was not in the cluster of other tour vehicles next to the ship. We eventually found the vehicle outside the gates to the port. A walk of more than 1.6Km from our ship. We wasted more than an hour, looking for the vehicle and walking to it’s location. My recommendation: Seeing the Temple of Abydos should be close to the top of ‘must see’ sites of Egypt. I cannot recommend this tour company for the tour, if your pickup is from Safaga port.
