Must See! - "The Kiss" by Gustav Klimt in the Upper Belvedere Museum - The Upper Belvedere Baroque Palace was our first stop on our recent visit to Vienna in late April. It was the perfect destination after an early morning flight on a chilly day and we gained easy entry past school children with our skip the line passes. The building was a spectacular baroque setting for equally beautiful art with marble walls and gorgeous parquet floors. The rooms were intimate and the Klimt collection was the largest anywhere! We particularly liked the Impressionist art and 20th art collections - works of Monet, Rodin, van Gogh, and especially the Klimts!

Upper Belvedere is where you see The Kiss - Gustav Klimt was arguably Austria’s most prominent painter and the one painting that I needed to see when in Vienna was The Kiss. This was my main reason for choosing to go to the Upper Belvedere Museum (out of the many other art galleries in the city). The museum organized its galleries to trace the development of Austrian art from baroque to neoclassicism to contemporary works. I got the online audio guide (€5) but realized later that this was not needed as the information on the paintings was posted next to them. Nevertheless the audio guide would be helpful for those with reading difficulties. I learnt a lot from this visit, particularly the era around the turn of the century (1900’s) when Austria was spawning a lot of new ideas on sexuality, albeit on different platforms. I’d liken Klimt in the world of art history to Freud in the world of psychology. There were quite a few Klimt pieces and one of the most interesting was an unfinished painting, because it showed how he organized the layout, the themes and the layers. The entry fee was €17.50 when purchased online. You need to book a time slot at the point of purchase but once you enter, there is no time restriction. Fun fact: I could see the Belvedere from the air when flying in to the Vienna airport due to its distinctive manicured gardens!

The famous palaces of Prince Eugene of Savoy - A complex made up of baroque gardens and a double summer palace, its galleries present a magnificent collection of Austrian art from altarpieces dating from the Middle Ages to Biedermeier and Secession paintings. Not to be missed in particular are the curious heads of Franz Xaver Messerschmidt (18th century) which express different states of mind, Monet, Renoir, Courbet, Van Gogh and of course Anton Romako (Empress Elisabeth), Gustav Klimt, Egon Schiele , Thomas Ender and many others.... Unfortunately, this museum is a victim of its success and you have to know how to deal with its sometimes cumbersome neighbor.

Good museum with nice garden - Good way to spend a couple of hours visiting an art museum. It was really very crowded at 10am so best to pre order your tickets. Upper Belvedere was the interesting one with plenty of artwork including ‘The Kiss’. Lower Belvedere was a little disappointing but it’s a nice walk through the gardens.

With a little preparation, you will have a great time - Entry times are important. Let me reiterate. Entry times are important. The Upper Belvedere does close in the evenings - check ahead of time. The cafes close and the sprinklers on the grounds even kick on in certain areas. That said, I had a good experience seeing the art at The Belvedere. I am no art aficionado, but I was able to enjoy myself by using the Smartify app. The app did not have information on every single exhibit, but it did have enough to help me understand the significance as a novice.

will not let you use the bathroom - 1) upper level is beautiful - do go to klimt / monet first - they are stunning. 2) the 5 euro walking "tour" is CONFUSING!!! does not tell you where to go etc. is NOT guided though i was told that it was. it is super hard to following and annoying to use on the phone. also the info provided was so-so. 3) staff at the museum are negatively impactful - and will not let you go to the bathroom despite the museum being open 4 more minutes. despite paying for entry, paying for an espresso, and paying for gifts. and keep saying "we are closed" in a loud booming voice. like why the torture? unnecessary.

Do not buy tickets through Trip Advisor - Do not buy tickets through Trip Advisor! If something goes wrong there is no one to help you and you will end up buying your tickets twice! The bar codes did not print and this is what happened to us. No one at the facility could help us because the tickets were through Trip Advisor.
